FLW Outdoors Article on Flats Fishing
Subtle contrasts

Bryan WattsThe Watts brothers might be considered the modern-day godfathers of inshore tournament fishing in Florida.
Originally bass fishermen, Greg and Bryan Watts began probing around Florida’s inshore flats about 20 years ago and found a new home.
“Flats fishing is all about subtleties,” Bryan Watts said. “The difference between the novice and the experienced flats angler . . .  read the whole article.

The Watts Brothers share a few of their secrets for success.
The most important Watts Brothers secret for success is to be prepared for competition.

For any angler to have success on the water they need to start off with a well-planned combination of equipment, so that in Bryan's words, "you are always putting yourself in a position to win". "It takes the right combination of preparation and opportunity."

Keep reading to find out what combination of equipment the Watts Brothers trust.

Q: Why did you guys choose Evinrude Motors?

Greg: The motors are faster, lighter, stronger, quieter and more dependable.

Bryan: The new ETEC motor is 70 lbs lighter than the comparable size 4 strokes, and it's 25% more    efficient and emissions friendly. It also has a 3 year, 300 hour service interval per scheduled maintenance. That's why we choose them.

Greg: The less time we have to worry about servicing the motor, the more time we can spend fishing. We tell our friends that an Evinrude may bend, but it won't break. Their motors will break. Evinrude is making a big comeback now that Bombardier owns it.

Q: Let's talk about your trolling motors.

Bryan: Minn Kota!

Greg: So far we have never had a breakdown in our trolling motor. They are quiet and dependable.

Bryan: They are more resistant to saltwater than any other trolling motor, and the less we have to work on equipment the better. Plus, they have a 3-year warranty.

Q: Talking about tools, tell me about that Power Pole on your boat.

Bryan: It should have Product-Of-The-Year for 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2004! It was a brilliant idea, just uncanny. When he brought the first one of those to my shop, and it was all built out of aluminum angle, I thought to myself "that'll never work! Then he started learning all about sand-casting and stuff, and matter of fact I ran the first one on my boat, and it looked kinda' ugly. But after an hour with it, hey, it's a great tool and it catches fish. It's just another one of those great tools. It has a remote control or you can put a button anywhere too

Q: And Lowrance?

Greg: It has revolutionized fishing for us! We clearly had no clue what GPS was all about until we got into that, with the new Lowrance GPS unit. We've never used a GPS up until about 4 months ago, not in Louisiana or anywhere else. We always had one of us reading a chart while the other one drives. "Go that way, go this way!" Now we can look at that screen and know where to go, how far to go, and they are easy to read.

Bryan: We had no idea what a GPS could bring to the deal, until we got the Lowrance 104C unit. It is unbelievable. If you get lost with a 104C, you need to just stay lost! It will get you there and get you back.

Q: What rods do you guys use?

Greg: The Lucky Craft rods are just stellar. We now have our own series, The GW series and the BW series of saltwater Lucky Craft rods that handle and perform better than any rod we have ever used for all game fish fresh or saltwater. Lucky Craft had me and Bryan design a series of rods especially for the saltwater market from popping rods to pointer rods, snook to redfish ! Finally a series of rods with actions built for the way we like to fish and win!!

Q: Lets talk about your lure choices.

Greg: All Lucky Craft Hardbaits, Crankbaits, and Lucky topwater - specifically We use the Sammy 115 topwater bait.

Q: Any other critical tools you guys use?

Bryan: Well, we use Plano tackle boxes, because we have to keep things organized.

Greg: We are using Navionics Chips.

Q: Duh. Okay, what's a Navionics Chip?

Bryan: They build the computer chips that go in the Lowrance 104 GPS system.

Q: What kind of push pole are you guys using.

Greg: Great question, because all push poles are not created equal, I'll tell you that. We used another brand for a couple of years, and this year we switched to Stiffy. There again, the difference is unbelievable just switching to a Stiffy push pole. You think it won't matter, staying on that platform for six hours? What's better than the lightest and strongest?

Q: And you mentioned something about Terminator?

Bryan: Yeah, we have our own Terminator bait. But we do use Terminator baits a lot as well.

Q: So that's about it for your secrets of success?

Greg: Unless you want to know whether it's mild wings or hot wings?

Bryan: Of course there's more to it than that, because it took us 20 years to get here, but that's a lot if it.
